Designer I Love: Tom Binns

“There’s a positive side to everything that’s dark,” says jewelry designer Tom Binns. Raised in the politically complex, economically depressed, and relentlessly violent Belfast, Northern Ireland, of the 1960s and ‘70s, Binns “grew up with no money and no toys” and, out of necessity, channeled his creativity into “making things.”

Binns went on to Middlesex Polytechnic Institute where he graduated with a degree in jewelry design. He later collaborated with counterculture luminaries Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren on their critically acclaimed Punk Couture collection, and in 2006 Binns received the CFDA award for Accessory Designer of the Year.

I’ve talked about building an outfit from the shoes up before, and when these Sergio Rossi boots crossed my desk, I was instantly inspired by their sleek sophistication. The buckles and elegant heel demand dark, sexy denim, so I’ll start with a slim pair of Genetic jeans. This severe combo needs a softer touch, like this airy blouse from See by Chloe. A shoe lover’s thing-on-the-side has got to be handbags, so I’ll grab (and hold tight to) this covetable clutch from Rag & Bone. Finish it off with layers and layers of necklaces, and this is one look I’ll be sure to repeat on a weekly basis.

A Midsummer Day’s Floppy Hat

With all the gorgeous fall fashions pouring into the shopbop offices, the new wool sweaters, knit tights, and leather boots make me forget it’s still one of the hottest months of the year. But I was reminded this weekend while watching an outdoor Shakespeare play in unbearable, scorching sunlight where even the sweaty actors were distracted from their ‘thines’ and ‘thou arts.’ The majority of the audience whipped out baseball caps to shield their poor, burnable skin from the 85 degree rays, but I was looking for a solution that was a bit more chic. I was wearing a lightweight silk scarf around my waist as a belt, so I took if off and rearranged it over my hair a la Grace Kelly and paired it with oversized sunglasses. Voila, it was suddenly ten degrees cooler and my face, neck, and shoulders were protected from the sun. But I wished I’d had a big floppy hat like this yellow or print number by Virginia Johnson rolled up in my handbag—it would have been perfect!

Over the past year at shopbop, I’ve been allowed to indulge my shoe fetish, discover a love for orange and yellow, and unabashedly declare my adoration of brands as diverse as Elizabeth and James and L.A.M.B. All of this exposure to sartorial inspiration – not to mention the incredibly clever artistry of shopbop’s own creative team – make it especially difficult to leave! Alas, I’m packing up my Loeffler Randall pumps and heading across the Rockies for grapey-er, more alcoholic pastures – I mean vineyards – but the fashion forward shopbop philosophy will stay with me like those random Simpsons quotes that always find their way into my conversations. So I’ll make sure I’ll toast you with a full glass of Pinot when I get there.

Little Line I Love: MK2K

There are the boldface, been-around-for-years fashion names that even my dad knows and, on the other end of the spectrum, the little, lesser-known lines from as-yet-unrecognized designers. Lately, I’ve become a big fan of the latter. While these highly edited collections may not have flagship stores that offer everything from sweat-socks to cell phone charms, they are chock full of the kind of artfully designed, trend-proof pieces I love.

MK2K is my current favorite of this small-in-size, big-on-style genre. Quietly building a following since its launch in 2006, MK2K offers the kind of pieces I wish my whole closet was filled with: layering-friendly knits in interesting shapes and feminine-but-not-too-girly tops and dresses, unusual neutrals and coolly unexpected trims and metallic accents. Mad for "Mad Men"

With the second season of “Mad Men” premiering this week, all I can think about is that early '60s style: blouses, skirts, and the necessary pump. And with shopbop, I’ve found updated versions of that ultra-feminine silhouette. The smocked blouse from Tucker pairs a smart print with lightweight silk, and Robert Rodriguez’s pintuck blouse dresses up with sheer chiffon. The August issue of People Style Watch has a section dedicated to helping ladies find their curvy side, even if they have a boyish figure. A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Barbershop Quartet

A couple of weeks ago I spent a few days in Music City for the Barbershop Harmony Society’s International Convention. While the convention demographic skewed a little older and the fashion skewed to sequined vests and matching zoot suits (and penguin costumes!), the style on the streets of Nashville reflected an updated honky-tonk sensibility.

Worn-in western boots were ubiquitous and, in the sticky heat of mid-afternoon CD shopping at Ernest Tubb's and eating too much barbeque at Jack’s, best paired with a light dress like the Magical Mini Dress and the Happy Mini Dress from Daughters of the Revolution, or the Placed Print Easy Dress from Juicy. Best bets for boots? Bronx, N.D.C., Golden Goose, and Frye all offer a western-style riding boot.

When the sun goes down, the shorts come out. Siwy Denim, William Rast, and True Religion showcase the favored distressed, frayed style. Summer tops like Mason’s Racer Detail Tank, LaROK’s Navajo Chain Top, and Rachel Pally’s Double Bow Top show off some skin (and the also-ubiquitous, slightly-faded tattoo) and add a chic sex appeal to dressed-down denim and boots. What is the philosophy behind your line?
I design jewelry for an individualistic woman whose style is not dictated by trend. My work appreciates natural beauty. Heirloom quality, beautiful details, and extraordinary materials are cornerstones to our brand. I am intrigued by the history of objects and talismanic pieces – I strive to incorporate that level of spirituality in my work.

What inspires your designs?
I hope that I offer a unique perspective and sense of community in my work. The things that drive me as a designer – my spirituality, my respect for our shared histories, and my love of the innate power and beauty of nature – are present in every piece of jewelry I create. Whether it’s a hammered texture on a simple pair of hoops or the amazing hue of a unique stone, I think about how every piece of jewelry is a unique expression of my creative nature and how my expression will translate into the expression of the end buyer. It’s the idea that we are all connected and that every piece of jewelry will have its own unique history that drives me. I endeavor to make things that speak to me and, hopefully, to others.

On the anniversary of the most famous prison break in western history, I thought it would be appropriate to pay homage to some of France’s best exports.
	In 1981, Robert Clergerie set up shop in the small French town of Romans. Approaching shoe design as he would sculpture, he created his famous women’s oxford and a parallelogram heel now known as the “Clergerie heel.”
	Sophie Albou honed her design skills at Azzedine Alaia and headed the family fashion business, La Garage, in Paris, before giving birth to two sons, Paul and Joe. In 1995, Albou launched Paul & Joe, an irreverent, colorful take on Parisian chic.
	Born in Grenoble, France, Catherine Malandrino strives to blur the line between dreams and waking life; to “enhance a woman’s femininity while cultivating an edge.” She says, “I want to design irresistible clothes that make a woman desirable, clothes that a man just wants to discreetly take off, clothes to keep as a secret, clothes that stay darling to you forever.”
	In 1927, Hubert de Givenchy was born in Beauvais, France, and by age 17 had arrived in Paris, ready to begin his career in fashion. Decades later, the Givenchy name is legendary and conjures images of sophistication à la Marlene Dietrich, Lauren Bacall and, of course, Audrey Hepburn.

The designers behind tuleste market, siblings Satu and Celeste Greenberg, grew up in rural northern California, combing through thrift stores and coming up with creative ways to put together stylish wardrobes. Inspired by their reworked vintage finds and driven to create their own unique pieces, the two created tuleste market. Combining a thrift store mentality with high-fashion gloss, tuleste market offers one-of-a-kind statement pieces for all style sensibilities.

We posed five questions to the designers about their line and their inspiration.

What is the philosophy behind your line?
We wanted to have a line with pieces that were both affordable and attainable, that was fresh and contemporary, but with a cool, classic vibe

What inspires your designs?
Our current collection is inspired by women of all ages and lifestyles, from city to country; new designer pieces and vintage thrift store finds; and most of all, it is inspired by our love of making something old look new again. Another source of inspiration is women in films that stand up with time from Michelangelo Antonioni and Jean Luc Goddard. The fashions mirroring our family during our childhood from The Monterey Pop Festival, and of course, our friends and diversity of living in New York.

Does your current collection have a theme? What is the inspiration behind it?
We don’t really have a theme. We wanted to have timeless pieces that all women would want to wear.

What is your best accessorizing advice?
Too much is never too much!!

Remembrance of Bikinis Past

Fast Times at Ridgemont High was on HBO (in the olde days kids, before Tivo and Netflix, hell, before the average family even had a VCR) about four times a week one summer when I was little. And though I had difficulty relating to the film’s risqué plot lines at a time in my life when risky behavior meant making prank phone calls, one thing did register indelibly in my young mind: Linda Barrett’s (as played by Phoebe Cates) red bikini. (This bikini is burned onto my boyfriend’s brain too, as it turns out, though apparently for entirely different reasons.)

Not just a bathing suit, this bikini symbolized the incredibly sophisticated lifestyle I imagined all teenage girls led, girls like my babysitter who laid out in the backyard wearing coconut scented suntan oil and drinking diet soda. Deep (Fashion) Thoughts

I wake up thinking about clothes. I go to sleep thinking about clothes. If you see me staring off into the middle distance? I’m likely putting together a look in my head or pondering something I saw another girl on the street wearing, wondering if it might work for me. And not just because it’s my job: for as long as I can remember I’ve been acutely fashion aware. According to my mother, I excused myself from the cake-cutting portion of my third birthday party so I could try on the pair of pink pants my grandmother had brought me as a gift. Though barely verbal, clothes had already captured my imagination.

I seem to come by this obsession genetically: my aforementioned grandmother made her own paper dolls as a child and wanted to be a fashion designer. (Times being what they were, she married young and never worked outside the home, channeling her design dreams into intricate, involved sewing projects.) Her spare bedroom is a shrine to her beloved wardrobe, to her favorite pieces from the past four decades: un-PC fur coats and print polyester maxi dresses, swingy Jackie O-era jackets, and the Joan Crawford-esque suit she wore on her honeymoon, all hung in closets or folded carefully in cedar chests and dresser drawers.

Like all fashion-obsessed folk, she appreciates that clothes are more than just fabric and seams: they’re opportunity for creative expression, tangible pieces of a personal history. 10, 20, 30 years from now, what will your outfit today make you remember about your life, about who you are at this moment?

Timeless jewelry worn by all that always has a slight edge and whimsical twist.

What inspires your designs?
I love the history of people, like famous sculptors – Paul Dubois, Rusmungy – or famous people like Joan of Arc or Queen Victoria. I love special touches that make your jewelry look different than most.

Does your current collection have a theme? What is the inspiration behind it?
We are definitely multitasking each season. We celebrate the Native American, a toast to the roaring ’20s, a piece of Woodstock, love charms, winning charms, fairies, and an energized lion.

What is your best accessorizing advice?
Accessories are just that, they enhance what you are wearing or what you are not wearing. Your accessories should accent the clothing, tie an outfit together, or be a focal point to look at.

Do you follow Coco Chanel’s rule: “take one piece off before you leave the house”?
Probably not. Sometimes it is put another one or two pieces on, and then again, it’s just take all but one piece off.

This installment of MALM finds our girl Kate at that Brit hipster-happening, the Glastonbury Music Festival. Pulled-together yet never precious, Kate’s utterly personal look feels perfectly in tune with her laid-back, music fest surroundings. (Not surprising, considering Kate was one of the foremost pioneers of the high/low, luxe groupie look.) But enough with the waxing rhapsodic for the moment, let’s get to the good part where I recreate Kate with stuff from shopbop.

	Sunner’s brand of preppy cool has found the perfect medium in this ruffled corduroy dress. Now that I’m not in school anymore, something has to take the place of buying new #2 pencils!

What is the philosophy behind your line?
I just want to make jewelry that’s cool and interesting and that isn’t going to date. St. Kilda is sophisticated, subtle, and it’s meant to enhance the beauty and style of the woman wearing it. It’s not about wearing a big piece of jewelry to show off. It’s not about flashiness. It’s about seeing someone and thinking, “She looks cool.”

What inspires your designs?
Everything and anything. Ultimately, my imagination inspires my designs but it can start anywhere. Sometimes it’s seeing a stylish girl and imagining what kind of jewelry she would wear. Sometimes it’s just a feeling that I want to express. Sometimes the gemstones I choose dictate what I’m going to make. I take design cues from the shapes and colors of the stones.
Travel is an easy answer, but I was lucky enough to be exposed to beauty and art and culture at a young age. I got to travel to Moscow often and once to St. Petersburg with my mum just to visit the Hermitage! When my parents and I emigrated from Russia we spent two weeks in Vienna. Then we moved to Italy for a year and then to Australia. Growing up in St. Kilda in Melbourne was a true inspiration—a beautiful hodgepodge of design and style that shouldn’t work but does.

What is your best accessorizing advice?
Take it easy. The worst offense is looking like you’re trying too hard. I always like to look a bit disheveled, and always, the bigger the diamond, the lower the heel. That said, I feel naked without jewelry!

Do you follow Coco Chanel’s rule: “take one piece off before you leave the house”?
Always! Less is more, that’s my rule.

Packing (for the) Heat

In my book, there’s no bigger end-of-the-weekend buzz-kill than hauling a bag stuffed with unworn shoes/handbags/dresses/tops/shorts out to the cab/car/jitney. I’m hot. I’m usually hung-over. I’m tempted to abandon it all at the curb. Adding insult to injury? I have to unpack said items once I get home. (Or, in my case, ten days later.) This summer I’m on a mission to perfect the art of weekend packing. My weapons of choice? Three multi-tasking, travel-friendly pieces that go from day to date, boardwalk to barstool.

Elegant enough for a nice dinner out, yet breezy enough for a walk down the beach, this sweeping, strapless number from Theory is one of my favorite recent finds.

Comfy as a flip-flop but markedly fancier, metallic flat sandals are pretty much my favorite thing to wear in the summer. An added bonus? They take up just a sliver of space in my bag.

This roomy, oversized clutch is exactly the right size for a magazine or two and my absolute essentials, yet it’s chic and polished enough for evening.

W’s Sublime Summer Camp

I finally had a chance to look through my July issue of W this weekend, and the brilliant Bruce Weber photo story immediately caught my eye. The question: What would happen if a flock of new designers hit the road for a summer adventure with a handful of top models? The answer: Lazy days filled with beautiful people in exquisite clothes. W and Mr. Weber showed off their fashion power, bringing together the hottest young names in the industry – Alexander Wang, Laura and Kate Mulleavy of Rodarte, Georgina Chapman of Marchesa, the ubiquitous Ms. Moss – for a class picture of fashion’s future, and some “candid” shots that suggest just a hint of sublime debauchery.

This is one summer camp I’d love to attend.
